Brief Introduction

The Institute of Statistics was established at the National Tsing-Hua University in 1988 though programs in Statistics have existed within the former Institute of Applied Mathematics for many years. Our alumni earned national and international reputation in both applied and theoretical statistics. Currently there are: 6 Professors, 4 Associated Professors, 1 Assistant Professor, 2 Emeritus Professors, and three staff. For 2012/2013 graduate enrolment in Statistics, there are 49 and 12 students in M.S. and PhD programs respectively.

Our institute offers a wide selection of M.S. program including Industrial Statistics, Financial and Economic Statistics, and Biostatistics and Environmental Statistics. The objectives of these sessions are the contributions to scientific inquiry by applying mathematical and statistical knowledge to the design of surveys and experiments; the collection, processing, and analysis of data; and the interpretation of the results. Students employ their knowledge of statistical methods to a variety of subject areas, such as biology, economics, medicine, public health, marketing, and industry. Student enrolled in our M.S. program should follow the Policies of National School Board and National Tsing-Hua University; plus, they must take courses, such as Mathematical Statistics, Data Analysis, Seminar, and Practicing Statistics.

The studies of our PhD students focus on not only the above description for M.S. program students but also the theoretical statistics. PhD students must pass the Qualification exams, Theoretical Statistics including Probability Theory and Statistical Inference and Applied Statistics, within the first two years after enrollment.

Aim

Statistics is the science of data analysis, which is collecting and summarizing data to make inference; hence, the education aim of our institute is to provide superb qualifications for positions in business and industry, research organization, and academia. The design of our M.S. program targets on the correspondence between the theoretical statistics and hands-on experience in a particular field. Moreover, the intention of our PhD program emphasizes on the theoretical statistics in order to edify qualified teachers and researchers.

Characteristics

Research Accomplishments Rich Experience
The research in this institute covers a wide range with strong groups in probability and statistics. Most of the papers are published in international journals. Currently, one professor has been appointed as National Chair Professor by Ministry of Education (MOE); two professors received Outstanding Research Awards (three times) from National Science Council (NSC); four professors are the elected ISI members; and one professor has been chosen as IMS Fellows. Within these recent few years, the number of accepted paper is approximately 70 and two third of them are included in the international journals of SCI. The professors in our institute have been Editors or Associate Editors of Biometrics, Statistica Sinica, Journal of Agricultural Biological and Environmental Statistics, Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Journal of the Chinese Statistical Association, and Journal of the Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers. In addition, many professors have served as statistical councilors of The Industrial Technology Research Institute, TSMC, UMC, and Taiwan Power Company.
Applied Statistical courses in M.S. program Our institute provides statistical consulting service for NTHU and outside of NTHU
The training of students in our M.S. program emphasizes on data analysis with fits the demand of markets/careers. The sessions offered by our institute aim to provide excellent education on high-technology industry, finance, biological and environmental fields. Our institute has a statistical counseling discussion room, which provides statistical solutions for all units of NTHU, companies, government agencies, and hospitals. Professors take turns to lecture “Statistical Practices” to provide this service; besides, students can earn practical experience from this lecture.
