Here, we use difference equations to demonstrate differences in elasticity in the relationship between shifts in age-, parity-, and marriage-specific changes and the impact upon the total fertility rate. We find that interventions which would have the highest impact upon the total fertility rate (all other things equal) would, in fact, be political and culturally unfeasible. There is some elasticity in older, childless married women moving to first birth. However, in the context of the reasons for such low fertility in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the extent to which such explicitly pronatalist interventions could be successful is questionable. |
