Master’s Program to Doctoral Program Pathway Regulations

Students in the Master’s program may apply to transfer to the Doctoral program, the regulations
for this process are as follows:

1. This transferral is handled in accordance with [National Tsing Hua University’s Master’s Degree Student to Doctoral Student Pathway Regulations]

2. In accordance with [National Tsing Hua University’s Master’s Degree Student to Doctoral Student Pathway Regulations], Master’s students who wish to transfer to the Doctoral program must have outstanding academic attainments. A Master’s degree student is deemed to satisfy this requirement if they satisfy any of the following conditions:
  • (1) Achieve a grade of B+ or above in the courses Mathematical Statistics and Linear Models in their first year of study
  • (2) Have a grade point average of 3.7 or above (equivalent to an A-) for the Institute of Statistics courses

3. The application period for the transferral is in July, applicants must submit the following documents:
  • (1) An application letter for entry into the Doctoral program
  • (2) A copy of their transcript with grades of graduate courses taken
  • (3) Two or more recommendation letters from professors

Each application will be evaluated by a committee of at least 5 members, with the Chair of the
Institute of Statistics acting as head of the committee

 

 

2021 Master’s Degree Regulations

Master’s Degree Regulations

  1. Within one year of admission, each student has to choose one of three specializations: (a)Industrial  Statistics, (b) Biostatistics, and (c) Data Science. Faculty members will advise each student on selecting an appropriate specialization for their individual circumstances. Each specialization has its own mandatory and elective courses, these requirements are described on each of the specialization’s tab (above).
  2. The mandatory courses common to all three specializations are: Mathematical Statistics (4credits), Linear Models (3 credits), Statistical Computing (3 credits), and Statistical Practice (2credits), totalling 12 credits. Only students who have passed all four mandatory courses may graduate. 34 credits in total are required for graduation. In addition, each of the 1 credit courses Seminar and Colloquium need to be taken for two semesters (it is recommended that students take the course Seminar in the first and second semesters of their first year and the course Colloquium in the first and second semesters of their second year); the credit for the course Seminar in the Fall semester is NOT transferable with the credit for the course Seminar in the Spring semester; however, the credit for the course Colloquium in the Fall semester IS transferable with the credit for the course Colloquium in the Spring semester. If a student has satisfied all degree requirements except for 1 credit of Colloquium in 3 semesters (one and half year, not including any exchange programs), the student may graduate without taking Colloquium, provided that they have taken at least 34 credits of courses.
  3. Each student has to complete the course Research Ethics Education (0 credit) before the end of their first year of admission.
  4. If a student wants to choose as their Master’s thesis supervisor a researcher that is not a member of the Institute of Statistics’s faculty, the student must find a member of faculty of the Institute of Statistics to act as their co-supervisor.
  5. These regulations come into effect after approval by the academic committee, any amendments must also be approved by the academic committee.

 


Outstanding Academic Attainment Scholarship

The Institute of Statistics has scholarships for Master’s students who performed outstandingly in the
entrance examinations and for Master’s students with outstanding academic performance during the
degree program. The guidelines for awarding the scholarships are as follows:

1. Scholarship for outstanding performance in the entrance examinations

A number of candidates who have achieved excellent grades in the entrance examination shall be awarded a scholarship.

2. Scholarship for outstanding performance during the degree program

At the beginning of each semester, students with outstanding academic performance in the previous
semester shall be awarded a scholarship. Several first year students and several second year students will
be awarded. The evaluation of students’ academic performance is mainly based on mandator
