Introduction to the Biostatistics Specialization
|
Background
Biostatistics is the application of statistics to problems in the biological sciences, this includes biomedical science, pharmacology, and ecology. Statistical genetics and bioinformatics are also in the scope of Biostatistics.
The scope of Biostatistics is very wide, encompassing Environmental Statistics, which concerns the study of the environment in which humans and animals live, as well as processes that influence it such as pollution, as such, Environmental Statistics is highly relevant to pollution monitoring and control strategies.
The intersection between Statistics and the Biological Sciences has long been a productive source of research. Now with recent advances in biotechnology and genomics and the recent push for more sustainable development, Biostatistics has only become more prominent. The deluge of data generated on a daily basis by biological scientists holds great potential for very fruitful research.
